You Need a Break
One of our student associate interns, Fernandos Ongolly, discusses the importance of taking time to get away from the home office, even when usual holiday destinations are not an option

August is here, it has been eighteen months of working from home and most of us might think that taking a break from Zoom is enough, but there is more to take a break from than the technology around us. Have you ever thought of how much the environment around your home office contributes to your fatigue? Just as most of us never had the experience of working virtual for such a long time, we equally did not have the experience of working amidst distractions of our kids playing, our cats interrupting Zoom meetings, dogs seeking attention among other distractions of life around us from both human and non-humans alike.
As we count a few weeks to ‘almost’ getting back to physical teaching and learning, we can take advantage of what these few days have to offer and explore the world around us; out of our ‘home offices.’ The perceived stress accumulated from working on computers for many months might have been because of the monotony of operating within a small physical space and our home set up without regular interaction with the physical environment.
To many, a holiday is not a taken until it was abroad somewhere in Spain, Greece, or Morocco; we all yearn to pack our bags and take that next flight out of Ireland, but circumstances dictate that we remain here in Ireland until it is safe to travel out. This however does not mean that you only turn off your computer and sit in your house.
Maybe the most needed break was to get out of that physical space that you have been stuck in for months. Did you know what your county has to offer? Have you been to the Cliffs of Moher, gone surfing at Lehinch, explored the wild Atlantic way, travelled along the ring of Kerry, done swimming at Fanore beach, visited the historic town of Cobh? If not, this is the time to do so, if yes there is still more that Ireland has to offer that you might not know. So, get out of your house, hit the road and go, you need a break!
